Sandfly Bay (Otago Peninsula)

On Saturday we journeyed to Sandfly Bay in the Otago Peninsula.  This beach is only a 20-30 minute drive (15 km) from downtown Dunedin, and is absolutely spectacular.

We ran down the sand dune to the beach!

Saw some lazy sea lions sun-bathing on the beach!

And we were lucky enough to spot some Yellow-eyed Penguins.  An endangered species (estimated 4000 left in the world according to Wikipedia).  They come surfing into shore at dusk, and will only emerge from the water if it is not threatened by the people one shore.  There were some volunteers telling everyone where to stand so that the penguins would emerge from the water. One of the women was so intense it was hilarious!  Luckily though, the penguins emerged and crossed the beach towards their nest.  It was so cute to see them waddling along!

Mount Cargill

Finally-  a beautiful and sunny day in Dunedin!!!

Petra, Marie Claire, Alex and I hiked up to the top of Mount Cargill.  Mount Cargill is an under 20 minute drive from the city centre of Dunedin.  The hike takes approximately 4 hours round trip... and I took it at a nicely brisk pace... making sure to capture the moment with tons of photos to share with you all :)
